Asankya RAPIDnet service alleviates issue of heavy strains on Internet for dynamic applications with 40x performance improvement

While the promise of the cloud has piqued the interest of many IT administrators, adoption of Internet-based applications has been slowed by perceived barriers that have left many waiting to make the move from private networks to the public backbone. But for those who have been resistant to utilizing the cloud because they are concerned that their interactive applications might place too large of a burden on their Internet connection, bandwidth concerns need not be an issue say experts at Asankya.

“As companies continue to move to richer, more collaborative applications for an increasingly geographically dispersed workforce, a major issue of using the Internet to deliver these applications is whether the bandwidth required for these real-time business processes can be handled without too heavy a strain on a shared, public connection,” said Asankya Chairman of the Board, Patrick Harr. “By building a Cloud Acceleration Network that provides consistent, reliable, high-speed performance for Internet applications, Asankya has effectively removed the barriers of adoption for the cloud. Our RAPID algorithms are uniquely able to provide high performance while working with encrypted traffic and maintaining application independence, ensuring bandwidth is no longer an obstacle for cloud-based applications.”

By 2013 the software-as-a-service market is expected to show consistent growth going from a $6.6 billion market in 2008 to around $16 billion in 2013, according to Gartner, which also predicts that application delivery services will continue to have the widest reach in the enterprise.

Harr believes that increasing speed, reliability, security and consistency are the enabling factors for customers to take advantage of cloud economics while preserving the secure, high-speed benefits of private dedicated networks.

Asankya has built a Cloud Acceleration Network (CAN), consisting of strategically located network nodes on several major Internet backbone providers, enabling applications to work around congestion and bottlenecks in the Internet. Asankya’s RAPIDnet(TM) service provides up to a 40x performance improvement for Internet applications, enabling corporations, SaaS providers and government entities to deploy interactive, cloud applications and data services delivered over the Internet without the need to utilize expensive private dedicated networks or build out multiple data centers to support users worldwide.

Asankya’s RAPIDnet provides LAN-like performance and consistency even when users are far-removed from application origin by using multiple parallel pathways across the Internet to aggregate bandwidth. With its breakthrough performance and unique ability to accelerate encrypted, application independent traffic, Asankya’s RAPIDnet enables customers to take advantage of the economics of using the Internet backbone for the secure delivery of applications and removes the barriers for broad cloud computing adoption.

MotionTouch, an innovative product design and manufacturing business based at Dunsfold Park in Surrey, has designed and manufactured the ground breaking Powcell light-powered mobile phone charger.

The Powcell sleeve slides onto the back of a mobile phone handset and its solar panel uses light to charge the unit. Using light-power makes Powcell an environment-friendly product and the sleeve is continuously keeping the phone charged – reducing the chance of a low battery preventing that important call.

In fact, Powcell has an internal battery which is being charged by exposure to light, even when the sleeve is removed from the phone – so when reconnected the phone will work even if its battery is exhausted. This means if you’ve let your phone battery go flat – Powcell will provide the power for more talk-time.

A DESIGN CHALLENGE

The initial versions of the Powcell sleeve have been designed for premium mobile brands – the Apple iPhone series and BlackBerry devices. Therefore a key challenge for MotionTouch was to create a product with superb quality and a sleek appearance central to its design.

The Powcell sleeve features premium-quality styling and it looks like an integral part of the phone. Its contours and colours are exactly in keeping the device it fits. Powcell works in complete harmony with the handset, allowing all the features of the phone to function perfectly.

On the electronics side challenges for MotionTouch included ensuring that the design of the high quality solar panel enabled the sleeve to charge most effectively. Also, crucial to the success of Powcell, the team had to design a super-efficient power management and distribution system to pass the power from the sleeve to the phone.

Powcell’s large solar panel provides the greatest surface area for light-capture and maximises its efficiency, including working in some ambient light conditions.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Ahead of full production the sleeve has attracted considerable interest from major phone manufacturers. Some have even approached Powcell about sleeves for future, yet-to-launch models of their phones.

Henry Powell, Client Director of MotionTouch says, “Dispensing with the need for plug-in chargers makes Powcell a ground-breaking eco-product. And the ability to provide power for that crucial call, even when your phone is flat, makes it an essential accessory. We are very excited to have been so involved in this unique product that could change the future of mobile technology.”

Chris Simmons, Sales Director of Powcell added, “We’ve designed the Powcell sleeve to integrate seamlessly with the iPhone 3G and the new 3GS. The unique design shines a light on the future of eco-friendly portable charging solutions. This exciting technology is completely transferable and can be adapted to suit almost all battery operated devices, which has attracted the attention of some of the world’s largest consumer electronic manufacturers. We are already planning to integrate this technology into future mobile devices, which will be seen in the very near future.”
